End of the Year Digest: A Year in Art: Creating a Virtual Arts Community

I have the unique opportunity to be part and parcel of 5 school communities / cultures. Even though schools are public space they tend to be pretty insular in nature: in fact they are probably some of the least public places you’ll encounter in that if you’re not directly connected to the school in some way there is very little chance you’ll ever visit.

So much wonderful art takes place in my schools that I wanted to give my community at large an opportunity to see some of it, so I’ve started sending out an end of the year digest with a few highlights. Below is what I sent out at the end of this school year. We had just come together to perform the Waka Waka at Young at Art, so harnessing that collective spirit felt good / right / appropriate.

To: Argonne, Longfellow, Monroe, John Muir, Cesar Chavez.

Hello All,

I was going to send out a 2011-2012 digest to every school, with a few highlights from the year…. and then I thought, since we are all a Waka Waka-ed community now, why I don’t I just send one digest out to all the schools I work with? That way everyone will have the same opportunity that I have - to get to see all of the wonderful art that’s happening in five schools across the district.

Below are a few highlights from the year. If you have time and feel so inclined, there is much more documented at (Artists in the Classroom (11-12)) - feel free to peruse at your leisure. I also just posted a lot of the visual art that I documented at the Young at Art exhibits. If you’d like to use any of the media you see, just let me know and I can send you the files (it’s all media released ie. I have media releases on file for the all the students who are identifiable in footage).
