Five Reasons to Stop Saying "Good Job!" By Alfie Kohn

This article was in my packet from Luna. I think I might have read it in my credential program as well but I’m not sure …. I do remember hearing a lot about Alfie Kohn and his work though, the Homework Myth especially.

I really connect with this piece - and realize that I need to stop staying “good job!” as frequently as I do. It feels manipulative when I’m saying it so it has to sound manipulative when students hear it.  It’s going to be difficult for me because it’s pretty ingrained - it’s usually the first thing that comes out of my mouth when I go on auto-pilot.

OK. That’s the big challenge for this year - to stop giving rote, saccharine praise.
