What Parents Want
This list is a result of a listening session held for the Parent Teacher Association at one of the schools I work with. This is what parents (at this particular school) want for their kids.
What is your vision for your child?
- Want academics - especially reading and writing
- Want after school program that focuses on academics
- Want an after school program that focuses on student interests such as dancing
- Want our students to be successful, confident leaders
- Want them to learn their languages – Spanish, English
- Want more academic instruction in all languages
- More time in English in Immersion
- More leadership opportunities
- Evaluation process needs to be improved for students and teachers need to be
trained to do this
- Subs need to be better trained
- Better physical space
- Academic skills to navigate middle school
- That English learners are learning the same skills in English and their native
language
- Keep school fun and interesting, especially in the upper grades
- An onsite middle school
- Better access to technology
- For our children to go to the university
- For our children to be reclassified
- For our children to realize that their actions have an impact on the world
- For our children to have the dream to go to university
- More help in the English language learning
- More tutoring
- Better facilities
- Good learning environment
- Better communication between communities (students and also parents)
- Supportive, enriching community
- Best citizens of the world that they can be
- Well rounded education including arts
- A love of learning
- That they value diversity
- Spirit of inquiry and curiosity
What do you need to get there?
- Good teachers and sufficient resources
- Give our children confidence that they are able to learn
- Engagement by all members of the community
- Good communication between parents and kids
- Instill love of learning at school and home
- Expanded access to books, technology and library
- Resource library that can help our kids
- PD for teachers
- Better PD for teachers
- More money
- Better after school programs
